Discography

Before venturing into music vocationally in 1995, Allen recorded eight cassette projects that are no longer available. It is our hope that the songs on those projects will find their way onto future recordings. (Six of the songs on Liberty were previously recorded in those cassette projects.) Consideration is being given to redoing two of those projects, Beyond the Shell and Cockburn Street, in their entirety. We'll keep you posted. The following CDs have been produced since mid-1995. Accidental Roads

al Roads cover Fourteen of  allen's most requested songs - including those about the little girl learning to ride a bike (running at her side), about the seed in the paper cup (flowers were made for the field), about the two little boys comparing muscles (game of who has more), about the girl dancing with an invisible partner, about God's paint and brushes, the ode to the rusty guitar strings, and the sunday driver. Rich lyrical imagery and gentle melodies, featuring allen's acoustic guitar with oboe, flute, and clarinet accents, make this his favorite and most colorful CD to date. A beautiful collection of music for all age groups. Entire lyrics are on the Selected Lyrics page of this site.

We Have Seen Him

We Have Seen Him

"We Have Seen Him" is a 13 song collection of songs which present imaginative reflections on the life of Jesus and those with whom He interacted during His earthly ministry. Many of the songs are written from the perspective of the person who encountered Christ in an attempt to bring their experiences to life and allow us to sense what they might have felt on those occasions. The songs track the life of Christ, beginning with His birth and concluding with His future return. These songs are soft and acoustic with the lyrical focus that characterizes much of Allen's music. Selections include We Have Seen Him (the shepherd's song)  Simeon, Mercy on Me (Bartimaeus' song), Love has come (Legion's song), The Prodigal, World Where He's a Stranger, Twelve Long Years (The hemorrhaging woman), The Harlot, Rich Man (Zaccheus' song), Malchus, Dirt Beneath the Nails, Stand Like Stephen, Among Us He Shall Stand.

Liberty cover (1997) - In response to requests, especially from college aged listeners, for a more up-tempo, percussive project, Allen enlisted the amazing artistry of Ed Cash, a remarkably talented guitarist and able producer. The result of this collaboration is a sound which is richly textured (and still acoustic guitar driven), highly rhythmic, and energetic. Vocals, including background support from Ed, Bebo Norman, Todd Bush, and the Salem Baptist Church Choir (a black gospel choir under direction of Patrick Love), are stunning! Lyrical content continues to be front and center, with thought-provoking poetry and literary imagery. The project is well suited for all ages, but will especially be welcomed by young adults (teens to 40's). Includes "Land of Love," "Makes Me Miss You," "Playing with Fire," "Magic of Surprise," "Stand on the Steeple," "Outside the Window," "Keep On Smiling," and five others.

Love Looking Down cover

(1995) - A variety of songs. Some slow, some up-tempo, covering the emotional palette from light-hearted to broken-hearted, introspective to humorous. A good sampler of Allen's lyrical content and acoustic style. A good selection for all ages. Songs included are "Enjoy the Ride," "Golden Choir of Aubiere," "Tattoo," "Love Looking Down," "No One Knows (I'm a Stranger Here)," and 7 others.

Open Windows - Out of Stock...please download here

Open Windows cover (1995) - A collection of soft acoustic songs including lullabies written for Allen's nieces and nephews. The songs were written, as Allen states in his liner notes, to "provoke thought and rest." Lyrically rich, softly sung, singably melodic, and warmly reflective. Includes three guitar instrumentals as well.
"Tell Me a Secret"
"Shepherd of the Sheep"
"Daddy and Daughter Day"

Talking with Tyler

Talking With Tyler cover (1996) - Tyler was Allen's dog and a lyrical prodigy. Light-hearted, highly metaphorical songs about the relative merits of being a dog rather than a man, about blind dates, about unfound Easter eggs, attempted suntans, Christmas trees in Florida, a goldfish suffering from stimulus deprivation, and others will invite certain laughter and, just maybe, a bit of serious thought. The recording is a seamless conversation between Allen and Tyler, with monologues and music. About half of the project is taken from performances before live audiences. All ages have enjoyed this unusual dialogue between man and dog.

"Tyler Talks Back"

Rivertown - Out of Stock...please download here

Rivertown cover
(1996) - This project was written as a commissioned work to celebrate Southern life and to highlight Allen's hometown of Columbus, GA. Despite its local focus, it has universal appeal and includes some memorable musical moments including a live during-the-Sunday-morning-service recording of "Angel of Mercy" featuring Allen with the Friendship Baptist Church Voices in Praise Choir, a black gospel choir from Columbus. A sometimes thoughtful, sometimes tongue in cheek, sometimes tender tribute to "the way we are down here." All ages, but especially from young adult up, will appreciate this mixture of folk, blues, jazz, ballad, and gospel music.

Learning How to See

Learning How to See cover (1996) - This project was written as a means of explaining, through spoken word and song, the basic teaching of the Christian faith, focusing on the themes of death and mortality. Mixed in with 13 soft songs is a letter which Allen reads to one of his nieces, Christina, whose cat, Cheerio, had recently died. Despite the fact that it is written to a young girl, the writings are intended for even, and maybe especially, the most senior listener. The songs and readings present a clear rendering of Christian truth and hope. It is particularly usable as a means of presenting the Christian message to the person who, because of their own or a loved one's situation, may be trying to understand death. The Christian who purchases a copy of this project is strongly encouraged to give it to a friend or acquaintance who is not a Christian.
