They
are Kids
My
work with Young Life, a ministry to teenagers around the country, teaches
me just how true it is that young people, and old ones too, "need footsteps
they can follow." For us older ones, especially parents, is it not worthwhile
to ask, from time to time, what kind of examples we present them? Would
it not be unfortunate, for us and them, if someone wrote of us someday,
as the Apostle Peter did his forebears, that we had offered our children
"an empty way of life" instead of the "life abundant" that Christ would
have us live and share.
Consider Jesus' own call to childlikeness (not to be confused with
childishness), as well as His warnings for us to whom children are entrusted:
"At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked 'Who is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' He called a little child and had
him stand among them. And He said: 'I tell you the truth unless you
change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom
of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 'And whoever welcomes a little child
like this is my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these
little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to
have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the
depths of the sea.'" (Matt. 18:1-5)
They are shortstops, they are dancers,
They are cowboys, they are clowns,
They are dropouts, they are drummers,
They are ear rings and gowns,
They live laughter, they live heartbreaks,
Just the way we all did,
They are dreams coming true,
They are kids.
They are skateboards, they're pretenders,
They are romance, they are flirts,
They are angels, dressed in blue jeans
They are t-ball, they are dirt,
They are jump shots, they're jokers,
They are somehow just learning to live,
They need someone to help them,
They are kids.
They are broken, they are fragile,
They are lost and alone and afraid,
They are searching for the signposts,
For someone to show them the way.
They need footsteps they can follow,
To help them stand up if they fall,
They need shoulders they can cry on
To help them make sense of it all,
They need fathers, they need mothers,
And others with wisdom to give,
They are searching , simply searching
They are kids…
They live laughter, they live heartbreaks,
Jus the way we once did,
They are dreams coming true, they are kids ..
