Same Way Now (4:07)
When I lived in Edinburgh in 1990-92, I read things and talked
to no small number of thinking people who opined that, while there
might have been a time in human "evolution" that some
concept of god served a purpose, the need had been obsoleted by
science, progress, knowledge. This song was written in response
to that thought.
"Times have changed" all the skeptics
tell me, fairy tales won't work no more
all the gods of the past are buried, throw the key away and
lock that door
they tell me, "long ago people lived in the darkness,
unenlightened and
unrefined
God was made as a crutch to the cripple, nothing more than
a nursery rhyme
but i believe that things are now what they were in the garden,
mock the maker and running away
people set on their own agendas, never think about their dying
day
the changes that they speak of, i don't see somehow
"that was then" they say but it's the same way now
Long ago people were selfish, in a 20th century way
long ago they were lost and lonely, just the way that they
are today
long ago people laughed at Jesus, called Him crazy and they
cursed His name
listen now in anytown America, you can hear that it’s
still the same
people say He's irrelevant in the day of the golden bough
but we needed Him then and we need Him now
And I hear them say, we are so sophisticated in the modern
age
our toys are bigger and we make our weapons smart
but deep within we're still just as devastated
searching souls and hungry hearts,
searching souls and hungry hearts
Long ago Jesus said come follow, few would listen, few listen
today
make their metaphysical objections, nonetheless there is an
empty grave
long ago sinners loved Jesus, children went where He would
go
broken lives found hope in His love, it's the same today you
know
everything changes, everything stays the same
