Another Man's Shoes (4:13)

When I was in law practice, and had to wear suits and starched shirts everyday, my very good skinflint of a friend George Mize told me about a place on Broadway in Columbus, named Laura’s, where one could buy cheap, but quality, second hand dress shoes. I bought a pair of brown wing tips for a very good price. When I wore them for the first time, I found myself wondering who the previous owner of the shoes might have been, where they’d walked, what they’d say if they could talk. That’s where this somewhat odd song came from. It’s another tribute to the insignificant.

Some of you might remember this old song from a tape called "Beyond the Shell." Note my shout out to Ben Lewis ("Ben E. Lou") near the end of the song.

i found them in a second hand shop down on lower Broad,

they were leather shoes that were made to measure,

bought them for a very good price, a very good price,

one man's junk is another man's treasure,

came off the feet of who knows who,

now they go shufflin' down the avenue

walkin down the street in another man's shoes.

These ain't no ordinary shoes, they are finely done,

They are high class, leather from the Argentine,

they got a good shine, ready for the rain or sun,

they are honey brown, pretty as you've ever seen,

long ago the owner was a long-horn steer,

now the chain of custody has brought them here,

walkin' down the street in another man's shoes

another man’s shoes.

walkin, walkin in another man's shoes

walkin down the street, happy feet, in another man's shoes

came off the feet of who knows who

now they go shuffling down the avenue

walking down the street in another man’s shoes.

He may have been a senator from southern Maine,

He may have been a salesman on the fruited plain,

He may have been a criminal, contraband,

could have been anywhere on any man,

and i really got no idea how they got off of his feet

to be walkin here in Georgia on a downtown street,

walkin, i’m walkin

walkin down the street, happy feet, in another man's shoes.

is it you Ben E Lou?
